HiScore TV // March 2007 – December 2007
In terms of design, Family Tetris came to us pretty much fully-formed – well, it was Tetris, after all. Most of the heavy lifting was done (as always) by HiScore’s unflappable production manager Sonja Howick, with my main contribution being suggesting UI tweaks and player feedback flourishes.
It was a weird one, Family Tetris. Radica wanted something young kids could play with their parents, so they came up with the idea of allowing players to select whether they were stacking 1-, 2-, 3- or classic 4-block tetriminos.
Of course, the problem is that there’s a reason Tetris has 4-block tetriminos: it’s the gameplay sweet spot – anything less is trivial, anything more too complicated.
I’d be fascinated to know if anyone bar the testers at Radica and HiScore ever played regularly with those other tetriminos!
