Hero Portal (Plug & Play TV Games)

JAKKS Pacific // November 2013 – April 2014

Hero Portal is the umbrella name for a new range of Plug & Play TV games from JAKKS Pacific that launched early 2015.

Inspired by the massively-popular Skylanders/Disney Infinity ‘toy to life’ games, Hero Portal allows the player to place a toy figure on the standalone console/portal and see the corresponding hero appear in the game. Each hero has unique strengths/weaknesses and can access different areas and secret missions.

There are three initial launches in the Hero Portal range, each based around a hit kids’ brand, namely: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and DC Comics superheroes (Batman, Superman, etc). Each starter pack comes with a console/portal unit, controller and two figures, with a further four figures available for purchase separately.

I’ll be honest: the game design wins no awards for originality. But still, it’s fun and you get a lot of bang for your buck – these are not games you’ll finish in an afternoon.

Best bit for me? Writing the scripts and dialogue, especially for Batman and the rest of DC’s pantheon of heroes… very cool!

The Power Rangers… not the same figure recoloured, honest. Honest.
The turtles like you’ve never seen them before – chopped in half!
